]]> This temporary installation at the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, was commissioned as part of the Sydney Design Festival 2018 and is the first in a series of annual architectural commissions by MAAS. The project is a playful interactive set of 4 suspended towers with internal mirrors to act as periscopes for museum visitors with view points set across 3 levels within the enormous space of the museums Turbine Hall.

This fun project features slim steel frames with highly detailed architectural finishes all hung from the original truss and crane framed roof but to highlight the sustainability values of the museum and team, it was also designed to have a ‘second life’ pavilion installation option. The project won the IDEA award for Excellence 2018 in the Event category.

]]> New public works with City of Sydney including extensive pavements and ground work with unique tension wire structures and support columns to support a series of cloud shade forms over the streetway in collaboration with artist Lindy Lee.

The dual layer metal perforated discs are suspended over the roadway with the setout to align with openings to the adjacent markets and they provide partial shade while allowing dappled natural light to penetrate and are intended to be reflective of nighttime street lighting to further activate the streetscape.

]]> A series of concrete and brass sculptures within a high school in Melbourne – MM Structural Engineering provided critical structural advice during iterative design process in close collaboration with the artist, in order to ensure the adequacy of the final design in relation to in situ usage considerations, buildability, artistic intent and cost.

Advice was provided on strength and stiffness of brass/bronze rod, concrete reinforcement, foundations, and connections between different components

]]> This external gathering space, temporary installation at the Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo, was commissioned for the Sydney Design Festival 2019 as part of a series of annual architectural commissions by MAAS. The project had a goal to 100% recycle all materials after its short term run on the museum forecourt with all fabric to be re-used as site hoarding.

The main innovation brought by MM Structural Engineering was to re-engineer the entire structure to only be built from standard 90 x 45 MGP10 timbers with bolted connections. This would enable all timber members to be easily dismantled and re-used as standard timber frame house studs by the builder in other projects and was a significant sustainability success of the project. ]]> The Illums Box was a functional and interactive temporary installation as part of Sculptures by the Sea 2009. Positioned on a concrete stormwater culvert at the south end of Tamarama Beach, this installation was built from three hundred plantation pine timber pallets, designed to withstand winds of up to 150 kilometres per hour and only tied down at six strategic points onto the concrete base.

The project was a perfect fit with the MM Structural Engineering sustainability values as it was 100% recycled-reused after the installation and the electricity used to power lighting was generated by solar panels on the top of the sculpture.
