This new seven storey student accommodation building is a critical new link between the historic Thyne and Reid buildings at the college. As part of this once in a generation capital works upgrade, the existing buildings are now interconnected and include new shared breakout spaces, music rooms and a new gym. An additional level was added on top of both Thyne and Reid buildings which required detailed existing building structural diagnostics and analysis along with a new excavated 2 storey basement directly adjacent to the existing foundations. Soldier piling and ground anchors which extended into the public roadway were part of the temporary retaining works design and many heritage structures and mature protected trees needed to be preserved as part of the project. The full works were completed 6 weeks ahead of schedule with delivery of the new 88 bed facility and associated landscape and external works ready for use.

The Rosewood Centre is a new sports and learning precinct at the eastern end of Barker College and is a focus of the schools masterplan strategy. The new building is comprised of 5 sports courts, 12 classrooms, a new gym and 170 car parking spaces with a feature fabric awning to the perimeter of the 150m long building. Post tensioned reinforced concrete floors were utilised to achieve long structural spans of up to 11m between support columns and a steel roof frame truss system was used to span 36m across the sports courts. Extensive landscaping structures surround the building which also directly links to the school sports fields and the works were designed to preserve and structurally span over an existing facilities building on the site. The project features an extensive solar panel system across the roof, was constructed over a 2 year period, and was officially opened in June 2020.

Adaptive re-use of this existing three storey building in Surry Hills to incorporate a new childcare facility and community space, including new outdoor spaces and link bridge to outdoor play area in adjacent site.

The project involved the gutting of the existing industrial brick building and construction of new internal concrete floors with exposed off form concrete, internal timber ‘pods’, structural glazing and stainless steel mesh. Extensive use of finely designed steelwork to existing building openings and balustrades/fences around adjacent playground and linking bridge.

Bethlehem College in Sydney’s Ashfield is a school with a long heritage, founded in 1881. This project sought to unite existing buildings by providing new bridge access to interconnect 3 existing buildings and one new building. The project also created a large central landscape designed courtyard area which sits between the buildings as a focus point for the new works to surround and look out upon. The structural systems employed were that of reinforced concrete framed floors and columns with significant structural steel formed roof areas to include dramatic roof skylights and voids.
Structural interventions to one existing 3 storey building involved removal of load bearing columns and walls at the lower levels with new inserted post tensioned reinforced transfer beams to resupport the existing building and achieve a new open plan layout. The project works were staged over a 3 year period to allow the school to remain in full operation during this extensive upgrade, and was opened in January 2019 for the beginning of the school term.

The demolition of the existing Margaret Bailey Building and the construction of a new 4-storey concrete framed building with 1 level of basement.

A new concrete framed Science Centre and extension to the Duntrim Boarding House for Ascham Secondary School.
The science centre has a 130 seat tiered lecture theatre and nine laboratories that are centred around an informal learning area over 2 levels and connect to a garden that is incorporated in the learning process.
The Boarding House provides 68 beds, with tutor accommodation, in a series of new and existing buildings including Duntrim House, a large heritage listed structure.

The Hillingdon Building involved an extension to the existing primary school with post-tensioned and reinforced slabs supporting a lightweight roof.

Value/Completion

The upgrade works for the historic Kings School at Parramatta included new modern teaching facilities, sports court, 500 seat Hall, and recreation spaces for over 1000 students on the state significant site. The structural interventions required the complete replacement of floor frames within the multi-storey heritage buildings. This critical construction sequencing of works required temporary stabilising steel frames and trusses to help the existing buildings endure the significant upgrade works and ensure their preservation into the future.

This project was initiated by Australia Street Infants School upon receipt of a grant and with Scale architecture the freestanding new shade structure COLA was constructed adjacent to the historic school buildings. A folded plane roof form as the covered outdoor learning area was utilised with expressed steelwork and plywood cladding to the underside. The structure is finished to a high architectural quality but retains the strong durability and robustness necessary for its use a school structure.
