Castle Cove House is a feature concrete formed residence of challenging geometry and complex structural solutions including a slender 7.0m cantilever folded concrete extrusion at the main building approach.

The bold architectural form presented multiple structural challenges as the building wraps around an existing mature tree on the site, while following the natural topography contours.

The residence has been awarded the ‘Best House in the World’ at the WAF World Architecture Festival 2019 and won an ACSE Excellence in Structural Engineering award as well as the Concrete Institute of Australia Excellence in Concrete Award NSW 2019. The projects final stage was completed in December 2020.

Extruded House is a showcase of off-form concrete as both a structural and finishing solution to the concept of an open plan room. The geometric form of the concrete pitched roof and walls is extruded from the original profile of the building it connects to. The structural engineering resolution of this is complex and required an unusual full arching analysis of the roof form with discreet locating of critical tie elements to control cracking and prevent spread of the roof. The sloped roof pitch was difficult to construct in off form concrete and this was recognised in the project as the winner of the Concrete Institute of Australia, Excellence in Concrete Award NSW 2019.

Welcome to the Jungle House is a project which pursues world class sustainability goals and aspirations, led by Clinton Cole and is a project we are very proud to have collaborated on.

The project has won National Sustainability Awards and been recognised at the World Architecture Festival 2019. The structural engineering design of the feature green roof planters and suspended fish pond were challenging and it is these sustainable living achievements which set the project apart and showcase the design values of the project and the designer/builder.

Architecturally designed by MCK Architecture and Interiors, this residence is a folded clad robust form which follows the natural steep site contours and reveals stepped discreet spaces and rooms as it progresses down slope from the street frontage. Deep cantilever shaded spaces are formed from the complex structure while external/internal adaptable spaces are created with the pool set at the low point of the residence against the spectacular views from the garden.
