The Illums Box was a functional and interactive temporary installation as part of Sculptures by the Sea 2009. Positioned on a concrete stormwater culvert at the south end of Tamarama Beach, this installation was built from three hundred plantation pine timber pallets, designed to withstand winds of up to 150 kilometres per hour and only tied down at six strategic points onto the concrete base.
The project was a perfect fit with the MM Structural Engineering sustainability values as it was 100% recycled-reused after the installation and the electricity used to power lighting was generated by solar panels on the top of the sculpture.
